Delicate shortcrust pastry meets chocolate and a soft filling in this assortment of Virginia pastries. Apricot brings a rounded fruit sweetness beneath dark chocolate; raspberry adds a brighter, sharper note, with raspberry pieces scattered over the coating.
The hazelnut pastry is filled with gianduja cream, then finished with milk chocolate and caramelised hazelnut pieces. Together, the three varieties offer a lovely contrast of fruit, cocoa and nuts, with enough difference between them to make choosing the next one part of the pleasure.
Virginia’s story began in 1860 in Sassello, in the Ligurian hills of north-west Italy. Its bakery became a meeting place for local people and visitors, and postcards of the time even referred to the square outside as “Piazza degli Amaretti Virginia”.
Individually wrapped and presented in a richly illustrated red tin with a gold lid, these are pastries to bring to the table when the coffee is ready and conversation is still flowing. The decorative tin lends the assortment the character of an Italian pasticceria gift, with something to keep once the pastries have been shared.
