Baci Chocolates and Their Hidden Love Messages

Baci Chocolates and Their Hidden Love Messages

🇮🇹 Why Baci Chocolates Come With Love Notes 🍫💌

Some chocolates are sweet. Others are romantic. Baci Perugina are both. Wrapped in silver foil and hiding a secret message inside, Baci chocolates are one of Italy’s most iconic gifts of love. For generations, they have been shared on Valentine’s Day, anniversaries and special moments, turning a simple chocolate into something deeply personal.

But where did this tradition begin, and why does every Baci chocolate contain a love note?

🍫 Born in Perugia: The Origins of Baci Chocolates

Baci chocolates were first created in 1922 in Perugia, a historic Italian city famous for chocolate making. At the time, Luisa Spagnoli, one of the founders of Perugina, was looking for a clever way to use leftover chopped hazelnuts from other recipes.

She blended the hazelnuts into a smooth chocolate filling, topped it with a whole hazelnut, and coated it in rich dark chocolate. The result was a unique praline with a soft centre and a distinctive shape.

Originally, the chocolate was called “cazzotto,” meaning punch, inspired by its knuckle-like shape. It did not take long to realise this was not the right name for a gift chocolate. The name was changed to “Bacio,” meaning kiss, and an Italian classic was born.

💌 The Love Notes Hidden Inside Every Baci

What truly sets Baci chocolates apart is the small message tucked inside each wrapper. This idea is believed to come from real handwritten notes exchanged between Luisa Spagnoli and Giovanni Buitoni, wrapped privately around chocolates.

That intimate gesture later became part of the product itself. Printed love notes were added to every Baci chocolate, transforming each one into a message as well as a treat.

Today, these notes feature romantic phrases, poetic lines and thoughtful reflections, often translated into multiple languages. For many people, reading the message is just as special as tasting the chocolate.

❤️ More Than Chocolate: A Symbol of Love

Because of their hidden messages, Baci chocolates quickly became associated with romance. In Italy, they are especially popular for Valentine’s Day, anniversaries and meaningful celebrations.

Giving Baci is a way of saying something heartfelt without needing many words. The note speaks for you.

This tradition has travelled far beyond Italy. Around the world, people search for Baci chocolates as romantic Italian chocolates, Valentine’s Day gifts and chocolates with love messages inside.

🕰 Why Baci Chocolates Still Feel Timeless

Despite changing food trends, Baci chocolates have remained remarkably consistent. The silver wrapping, the dark chocolate shell, the hazelnut centre and the love notes are instantly recognisable.

They feel timeless rather than trendy. When you open a Baci, you know exactly what you’re getting. A moment of sweetness, a thoughtful message, and a connection to Italian chocolate history.

A Small Chocolate With a Big Story

Baci chocolates are proof that simple ideas can last forever. A clever recipe, a romantic name and a hidden note created a tradition that has endured for more than 100 years.

They are not just chocolates. They are tiny love letters, wrapped in foil, waiting to be opened.
